Strategies to reduce plant height in dual‐use intermediate wheatgrass cropping systems

Intermediate wheatgrass [IWG; Thinopyrum intermedium (Host) Barkworth & D.R. Dewey] is a perennial cereal and forage crop marketed for its grain, Kernza. Lodging, which correlated with plant height, can reduce IWG grain yield. Our goal was to determine the effects of growth regulator trinexapac-ethyl (TE) application rate; harvest timing; N rate on lodging, aboveground biomass, yield, index. The experiment established in 2015 southern Wisconsin using population bred increased experimental design randomized complete blocks three replications factorial arrangement factors: TE (0, 0.22, 0.66 kg a.i. ha−1), timing (unharvested, summer, summer + fall, spring fall), (90 135 ha−1). Responses were measured second (2017) third (2018) production years IWG. Lodging not observed. No interactions among treatment factors detected. Plant height 6% lower, yield 26% higher, index 48% higher low compared non-treated, averaged across other factors. Harvesting fall reduced by 7% unharvested control but 11%. high 4% 26%.
